SURREY BRANCH JANUARY 2008
Dear Member,
I hope you are recovering from the excesses of the festive season and wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year. It has been a while since my last newsletter to you but I have at last been able to sort out a diary for 2008. I am sure you will understand when I say that, for the last few months, pressure of work has taken up all of my time.
Attached is the proposed meeting list and you will see that the next meeting in on the 7th February. Those of you who attended the last meeting will remember the excellent talk Lee Gledhill gave us on NHS, and he kindly agreed to come along to talk to us about the Court of Protection procedures and regulations. We are all experiencing difficulties with the OPG/COP and I am sure you have been watching the SFE forum and the many complaints that have been raised about them. Lee is Head of a London Chambers and is also attached to the Guildford Chambers. He really is putting himself out to talk to us and it is such a shame when only 7 of us bother to turn up. Do please make an effort to come along to this meeting.
I know that Surrey is a huge county and that it is difficult for everyone to make the meetings but it does seem to be the same 7/8 of us that make the meetings. To try and improve attendance I have arranged for the February meeting to be held at Sunrise Senior Living, Russell Hill Road, PURLEY. I understand they have an underground car park so, hopefully, there should be no difficulties. There is meter parking on the road if the car park is full.
I have suggested that the May meeting be held at Sunrise in Guildford, the September meeting at Sunrise in Esher and the November meeting at Sunrise in Virginia Water. Please, please, please let me know if these venues are a problem. If you can suggest a venue near you then tell me so that either I can contact them to host a meeting or you can. It really would be a shame to cancel meetings because no one wants to come to the venue.
The fee that you pay to HQ is for your membership of SFE generally. The branch gets no financial assistance and relies very heavily of kind souls giving their time and efforts into arranging meetings and contacting members. The branch meeting fees of £35 per meeting (or £125 up front for the whole year) (of £70 per meeting for guests) covers the costs of the running costs for the branch and the cost of speakers where charges are made. You can always bring a cheque with you but I do need to know if you are coming.

If anyone would like to joint the committee please let any of us know, we will be delighted to have you on board.
For the last couple of years the Surrey branch of STEP has kindly agreed to allow SFE members to attend the STEP branch meetings at the cost of their own member’s rate. This (mutual) arrangement is to continue. STEP Surrey Branch have their next meeting on 8th January at the offices of Stevens & Bolton, The Billings, Guildford (4.00pm start) where a talk is to be given by Mark Baxter of 5 Stone Buildings on the pre Budget report. The members rate is £50 a meeting (or £150 up front for the whole year’s meetings) (or £75 per meeting for guests). If you would like to attend please let me know. You can bring a cheque with you.
