March 2007: Peter Twiddy Kicks off 2007 for Somerset Group

David Sinclair, Regional Coordinator for Somerset was pleased to welcome Peter Twiddy. Unfortunately Peter didn’t have time for site visits but covered farmhouses, discretionary trust and provoked discussion on last years Finance Act.

David said, “When Peter was at the Capital Taxes office we all used to be on the edge of our seats listening to his every word. It was a great honour to have him be our guest lecturer and the Inland Revenue won’t be the same without him”.

Phizackerley decision

Peter mentioned a recent case of Phizackerley decision on s.11 IHTA which is to be decided upon shortly (and will have been by the time this is published).

Points useful for other regional groups

q Excellent conference facilities - Somerset continue to use an excellent conference centre in Bridgwater which although expensive offers an excellent accessible base

q Online bookings - Somerset have launched an online booking system, which was successful (payment by cheque only) www.sfesomerset.com/store (NB: The website can be located from the SFE main website and any region wanting to do similar things should contact Caroline Bielanska in the first instance so we do not cause confusion with too many different public sites).

q Dropping off the notes - The printer dropped off the notes at the venue which was a real help and saved us time and stress – although there was some panic when the course assessment forms couldn’t be found. Luckily the printer dropped them off with half an hour to spare!

q Proof read documents - They had some headed paper produced but Solicitors was spelt incorrectly and read Solictors for the Elderly – very embarrassing considering we had been using it for some time.

Peter wrote David a lovely letter and said “May I compliment you on the organisation and venue….I enjoyed the audience, and hope they derived something of value from the afternoon.”
