home Conference - 26 January 2006
REPORT SHROPSHIRE SFE REGIONAL CONFERENCE 26TH JANUARY 2006
‘CHANGE OF MIND’ People with Alzheimer’s – How can we best help them and their carers?
This conference was a first for SFE in many ways.
· First full-day conference outside London;
· First conference in association with the National Alzheimer’s Society;
· First full-day conference in a purpose built Conference Centre;
· First full-day conference (so far as we are aware) with delegates from such a diversity of professions and backgrounds. In addition to lawyers, delegates came from Health and Social Care, including Mental Health workers, care support workers (who undertake carers’ assessments), charities such as Age Concern, Crossroads and Independent Age, IFAs, representatives from senior citizens forums, lay carers and even a detective inspector! The latter is soon to be chair of Adult Protection at the Local Authority.
Christine Wright (one of the delegates) who is Joint Training Officer for Adult Community and Health Services in Shropshire wrote afterwards “An excellent day – one of the most worthwhile learning events I’ve been on.” Alison Marpole – Specialist Mental Health Nurse Practitioner wrote “thank you for an informative and interesting day …. good to hear from others that we are all trying to reach the same goal for our clients. It is useful to meet with other professions as mostly we seem to just meet with other health and social care providers.”
Feedback from Lawyers included “An excellent day. Congratulations to those who organised it” - “Hats off to you for providing such a good day “ - “ The subject matter was really interesting. Excellent value for money “.
On reviewing the document “What are the aims of Solicitors for the Elderly?” and considering the core aims I feel we have fulfilled most of them! It was an excellent training day including an inspirational talk by Barbara Pointon and a thorough review by Jean Gould of the legal rights and effective remedies in Health and Social care.
The day, however, was much, much more. It was an opportunity to build very constructive relationships with statutory, voluntary agencies, charities and health and social care providers.
Thanks to it being a purpose built conference centre we were able to have six parallel workshops to consider the case of a couple, one of whom develops Alzheimer’s, and to follow them through the stages of home care, residential care and then nursing care, either at home or in a care home registered for nursing.
At the end the 80 delegates seemed in no hurry to leave and 20 minutes after the official end we were still talking about the workshop scenarios, having re-assembled in the lecture theatre!
