home Meeting Report - 24 November 2004REPORT FROM THE SHROPSHIRE REGIONAL GROUP OF SFE
On Wednesday 24th November 2004 the group held a meeting at Lanyon Bowdler, Solicitors in Shrewsbury (our thanks to them for hosting the event). We were delighted to welcome Lawrence Tudin and Justine Littlemore from Daniels Solicitors in Macclesfield, Cheshire to our meeting.
We had speakers from the Department of Work and Pensions on · Pension Credit · Attendance Allowance, and · Disability Living Allowance.
Those who attended felt that it consolidated their knowledge and extended their information in this important area of benefits.
There was a full and frank discussion about the inadequacies of the computer system at the Department of Work and Pensions which allows only one signatory to be accepted. This causes immense difficulties with unregistered Enduring Powers of Attorney when, legally, the Donor and the Attorneys should be able to sign alternatively, and with registered Enduring Powers of Attorney where there is more than one attorney. The Group hope that, at national level, Solicitors for the Elderly will be able to exert pressure on the DWP to rectify what is clearly an inadequacy of the present system so that it reflects the true legal position.
The next meeting of the group will be in the afternoon of Wednesday 12th January 2005 at the Shropshire Education and Conference Centre, Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Mytton Oak Road, Shrewsbury SY3 8XQ Tel: 01743 492500 e-mail: seccreception@rsh.nhs.uk The Coroner, John Ellery, has kindly agreed to come and speak to us about his role in relation to sudden deaths and inquests. We shall also have the Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths to talk about the priority order for registration of deaths, and changes which are imminent. Further details of this will be sent out in due course.
During the remainder of the year we plan the following events:
· A lecture by Anne Edis, President of SFE on all aspects of Elder Abuse · A lecture by Alistair Brierley on recent developments in the law of Wills and succession
· An afternoon focused on the important area of intermediate care (up to 6 weeks free care which can be in a number of settings, including the person’s own home, or a nursing home), and care delivered at home, to include the financial assessment of such a care package. We hope to have a panel of speakers, including the organiser of Intermediate Care in Shropshire, and Age Concern who are commissioned by the Local Authority to provide a number of carers for people in their own homes.
We always welcome ideas from the people who attend our courses, or would like to do so, on the subjects which they would like to be covered.
Liz Holdsworth, the Shropshire Regional Group Co-ordinator, is a consultant with Wace Morgan, Solicitors in Shrewsbury and is providing training on elderly issues to other regional groups of SFE and to solicitors in-house under the ‘SFE umbrella’. Most recently she lectured on the funding of long term care, both in nursing and residential homes and at home, to a delightful group of solicitors and legal executives at Thomas Eggar, Solicitors in Chichester. |
