home Update from Shropshire Regional GroupSHROPSHIRE SFE REGIONAL GROUP
On Wednesday 26th May 2004 our lecture was by Dr Amrit Singh, consultant psycho-geriatrician at Shelton Hospital, Shrewsbury. He talked on the different kinds of dementia and their effects on capacity. The two-hour lecture was superb and much enjoyed by the attendees. Dr Singh is prepared to lecture elsewhere and can be contacted by e-mail on Amrit.Singh@shropshirepct.nhs.uk or telephone on 01743 261000 (ask for Dr Singh’s extension).
Our future events include a lecture by Philip Spiers of the Nursing Home Fees Agency (NHFA) on 6th October 2004, and a presentation on the 24th November 2004 by the customer liaison manager at the local Department of Work and Pensions, together with a representative from their regional office at Wolverhampton. They will talk about benefits relevant to the elderly and disabled. This will not only give us useful information but also make all attendees aware of the people whom they can ‘phone at the DWP who can be asked to assist clients with a “benefits check”.
The group plans to have an “afternoon of death” in late January (to cheer us all up!), when we hope to have the Coroner and a representative from a funeral director’s to talk about deaths in unusual circumstances.
Liz Holdsworth – the regional co-ordinator has stepped down from the partnership at Wace Morgan. She remains with the firm as a consultant on a part time basis, but is now giving more time to training other solicitors (and Doctors and other groups) in elderly client matters. She has recently lectured to the new SFE Regional Group in Abergele, North Wales and will be lecturing to the new group in Cardiff on the 1st July. On the 6th July she will be running workshops on continuing healthcare funding for the Probate Section Annual Conference.
From 1st October 2004 she is prepared to do further lectures on this or other subjects either to Regional Groups or as ‘in-house’ training with private practices (under the SFE umbrella!) on a variety of subjects including ‘at least 10 things every solicitor dealing with elderly clients needs to know!’ She can be contacted on 01743 718495 or by email lizaholdsworth@hotmail.com
We have an excellent lecturer, Alastair Brierly, who is a partner at Turnbull Garrard 01743 350851. Email his secretary irena@turnbullgarrard.co.uk He has given most entertaining talks on recent developments in Wills and succession and on trust legislation. He is a compelling speaker and we can highly recommend him. |
