Accreditation

Information on accreditation of training courses

Solicitors for the Elderly is approved by the Law Society and ILEX as a provider of Continuing Professional Development training. In general terms, other than courses on financial services courses run will not require separate authorisation from the Law Society or ILEX. As a national organisation and as regional groups it is possible to self- accredit courses. This information is aimed at regional co-ordinators who are conducting training and wish to self accredit.

We pay a fee of £25 for each course undertaken.

Please ensure that any training you provide covers this fee as we will need to  pass this on to the Law Society at the end of the training year.

Most regions, which provide training, charge delegates. The amount to be charged is of course at the discretion of the group organisers, however, any course, which is to be run which will be result in a loss to the group should be notified to the Administrator as soon as possible. Depending on the circumstances, it may mean that the course has to be cancelled. If there are sufficient funds in the regional groups bank account to meet any shortfall the Administrator will not need notifying. The Committee need this information to ensure accountability to every member as each group is part of the whole organisation and not a separate entitiy.

The allocated CPD reference is CCN/SFTE.

·        Please ensure that the reference is quoted to delegates when accrediting future courses.

  • You will need to keep a record of the delegates attendance list for each course for at least 2 years after the course as the Law Society as part of their random monitoring of solicitors’ training records may contact the administrator to check on a delegate’s attendance on one of our courses.

  • It is unlikely that the Law Society will wish to see materials but any supplied at the course must be retained for at least 2 years after the course in case there is routine monitoring by the Law Society.

  • Evaluation forms must be completed by the delegates in the form attached. Please keep these also for at least 2 years after the course.

  • At the end of the CPD year (31st October) the Administrator will write to you to find out how many course were conducted during the previous 12 months. This information will be collated and sent to the Law Society with their fee. At the time of providing this information, the regional group must send a cheque to the Administrator made payable to “Solicitors for the Elderly” for all courses  which have been accreditated by their group.

Reminders

Please ensure that you have opened up a bank account in the name of your regional SFE group. Each year you will be required to complete accounts, which will need to be sent to the Treasurer, Julia Abrey at Withers LLP 16 Old Bailey London EC4M 7EG.

Please ensure all transactions go through this account rather than your firm’s client account and that all receipts are retained. You may be required to furnish this information to the Treasurer.

If you hold over £5,000 in the account the surplus will need to be sent to the Administrator to be paid into the national bank account. This will ensure as that profits are ploughed back for the benefit of the members in the fairest way.

The aim of regional training is to provide cost effective training to our members. Some attendees may not be members. The Committee recommends that delegates should become members in order to attend at the latest a second training course run by the regional group.
